Three themes guided the process: for the city, the building as an installation; for the architecture, the program flexibility; and for the construction, a reproductible pattern of technology. This pattern is indeed the series’ unifying element, transforming a technical problem into a language element. More specifically a transparent volume assembled from the junction of steel profiles and frameless glass. For this pavilion, we worked with two overlapping boxes: one in glass, which contained the exhibition area, and the other as a kind of second skin which acts as a brise-soleil at the same time, thereby enabling the required transparency for the functioning of the showroom. This skin is defined by a system of elevated walkways which, at the same time, define the facade’s dynamic lines, as well as set a promenade from which the interior can be contemplated. The building is located on a major expressway access to Congonhas Airport, Sao Paulo, and the possibility that it would only be seen at speed led us into thinking of creating it as a linear floating on the landscape. An installation, so to speak, which, seen from the public space, forces the architecture to go beyond its function and presents itself to the city as a unique building.&nbsp;Pavilions are part of an architectural culture of works that are distinguished by the space volume they hold and not necessarily by the program they harbour. They are works made for no one as they are intended to withstand their use and change with time. This flexibility bestows upon architecture the responsibility to survive by other means if it makes sense, but their part in history cannot be determined. The method utilizes new technologies and individualized care; the students sit in circles and are divided into groups of six that are accompanied exclusively by a dedicated teacher. After experiencing this method in adapted schools, the secretary came up with the idea of designing a space to accommodate the innovative proposal. The site chosen for the construction of the first pavilion was an area on the lot of the Orsina da Fonseca Municipal School, which functions in a building with modern features in the Tijuca's neighborhood, in the West zone of the city. There, they found a 20 x 20 meter patio avaliable. The architecture team created a prototype that could adapt not only the specific patio, but also to other restricted spaces od diverse topographies. Generally speaking, the pavilion is defined as two volumes laid out at half - level in relation to each other. The academic block can be found on one side, with its flexible teaching spaces, including its pilotis area and rooftop. On the opposite side is the support block with its water closets, administration area and other auxiliary environments. As an extension of the initial proposal, the architects developed a hypothesis for the Rocinha community, with a variation of the prototype on a larger scale. It was an unique opportunity to work with a full block at the urban city center, thus inverting the region's land logic defined by small lots. For such urban condition, the idea was to create a public space at one of the densest sectors of the city, a sort of square that could integrate the two most important equipment which composed the program: the Paulo Souza Center headquarter and a technical school. The headquarter building gathers the administrative activities in five floors and a museum on the site's archeology on the ground floor relating itself to the street. The remaining buildings are connected to the school; they form a more plural set that articulates itself in many levels over the square, provoking a promenade — as if the street went inside the block. The insertion of an equipment which intends itself to be a transformer of urbanity is certainly a bet, specially as it still is a construction disconnected from a wider urban plan for the region. We believe, nevertheless, that the city constitutes itself through its significant facts — and here we include the architecture. The design entailed a complete transformation of the external features and internal organization of a building that occupies the entirety of its trapezoidal lot that defines two street corners. In the proposal, the 1950's rounded edges of the building's street corners gave way to sharp angles delimited by the contour of the aluminium louvers. The modulation of the second skin goes with the concrete structural mesh of the existing building, whose pillars were reinforced. In addition to benefiting the newfound use of the building, the strengthening procedure also allowed for the construction of a metal structure penthouse pavilion for events. In addition to the louvers on the façade, the external face is marked by a concrete base, highlighted by the name of the union written in low relief. Keeping the façade almost untouched, the renovation radically altered the interior, thanks to the structural reinforcement provide by metal beams. The main characteristic of the renovation is the transformation of the ground floor: the environments that make up the main house and the guest house open up onto a patio, creating a continuous space.
